Subject: Listing Marks and Approvals for Butt Hinges Reference: Hager UL File R14627
To Whom It May Concern,
This letter is in reply to requests for information concerning the use and testing of Hager Companies Butt Hinges, including BB1279, BB1191, BB1199, BB1168, ECBB1100, ECBB1101, ECBB1102, and
ECBB1103 ball bearing leaf type hinges.
Steel or stainless-steel leaf type hinges that meet the construction requirements shown in Table 6.4.3.1 of NFPA 80, 2019 Edition for leaf size and thickness are not required to be Listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Additionally, steel or stainless-steel hinges as described in this Table may be used on wood or steel swinging type fire doors without any fire testing of the hinges being conducted. This is due to testing experience that shows that the use of steel or stainless-steel leaf hinges does not affect the performance of the doors in relation to the test Standard and that the Standard has no effect on their performance in a door assembly.
If the hinge is of a type or material not described in NFPA 80 such as brass pivots or aluminum continuous hinges, then UL conducts a fire test investigation to list these types of products per UL Standard UL10B or UL10C. The resulting certification is placed in the UL Door Hinge Category (GWZQ) in the UL Fire Resistance Directory. The intention of this UL Category is to address those products which are not described by Table 6.4.3.1 or Paragraph 6.4.3.1 of NFPA 80, 2019 Edition.
Spring hinges that are intended to be used to close a door are Listed separately in the Swinging Door Closer Category once they show Grade 1 compliance to ANSI A156.17.
I trust that this meets the needs of your request and if we can be of any further assistance, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Mark A. McRae
